Fiddler on the Roof is three hours long and earns every minute

Fiddler is remembered as warm, and it is warm, which is how people forget what actually happens in it. The film is about the destruction of a community, told through one family, over a period in which every certainty is removed one at a time.

The structure nobody mentions

Tevye has three daughters, and each one asks him to accept something further outside tradition than the last. The first he can bend to. The second he can just about bend to. The third he cannot.

That escalation is the whole architecture. The film is asking how far a person can stretch before something breaks, and it answers honestly: there is a limit, and reaching it costs him a daughter.

Why the length is right

Three hours feels indulgent until you notice the film is doing something slow deliberately. It spends a long time establishing a way of life in detail — who does what, who marries whom, what the rules are — so that when it is taken apart, you understand the scale of what is lost.

A shorter version would have the plot and none of the weight.

Topol

The performance carries the film and it is bigger than naturalism allows. He plays directly to the audience, arguing with God in asides, and it works because the character is genuinely a performer within his own life.

Watch it if

You want a musical that is about something. Be aware of the runtime, and be aware that the last twenty minutes are not the ending most people remember.
